US Navy Cruisers
Cruisers are large ships that can perform a variety of military functions—from supporting carrier or amphibious forces, working independently or acting as flagships. Cruisers have often been used to protect U.S. interests during periods of civil unrest in foreign countries, and they have played a part in every U.S. conflict since the Spanish-American War.
Cruisers have been used by the U.S. Navy for well over a hundred years. Today’s cruisers carry Tomahawk cruise missiles, which gives them the ability to strike from long range. Some modern cruisers also have Ballistic Missile Defense capability.
As it does for other types of vessels, the Navy uses certain traditions in naming cruisers. Generally, they are named for U.S. cities. But certain types of cruisers follow other patterns: armored cruisers carried the names of states, large cruisers were named for territories of the United States, and battle cruisers were named after famous ships. As cruisers were reclassified, it was not uncommon for their names to change as well. Today’s cruisers take their names from a number of different sources.
Construction of the very first cruisers—the USS Atlanta, USS Boston and USS Chicago—was authorized in May 1883. The design and construction of the steel cruisers heralded a new stage of shipbuilding and an early move away from the old wood and sail ships. Congress authorized seven additional cruisers—including the USS New York and the USS Olympia—in September 1888. USS New York, the Navy’s first armored cruiser, was commissioned in August 1893.
During the Spanish-American War, cruisers were relied on heavily. The demand for cruisers exceeded the supply and a number of civilian ships were converted into service as auxiliary cruisers.
Cruisers also provided an important stepping-stone in the creation of the aircraft carrier. On Nov. 14, 1910, 24-year-old civilian barnstormer Eugene B. Ely piloted the first flight off a ship when he took off from a wooden platform built over the bow of the USS Birmingham (CL 2). Two months later, Ely was also the first to land a plane on a ship, this time on a platform built over the USS Pennsylvania (ACR 4).
On Dec. 14, 1911, Pearl Harbor was opened as a fleet base when an armored cruiser—the USS California—steamed up the channel and into the harbor.
The U.S. naval involvement in World War I began in late May 1918 when the Russian revolution and Russia’s withdrawal from the war left large quantities of arms and munitions unprotected at Archangel. The Allies determined to occupy Archangel to prevent the supplies from falling into the wrong hands, and the cruiser USS Olympia (C 6) landed the forces to occupy Murmansk, without opposition. In June, the Allied forces advanced and occupied Archangel. At the end of July, the USS New Orleans (CL 22) transported a marine detachment to Tyutuke Bay, Russia to protect American interests there.
The U.S. Navy was relatively unscathed during World War I. When the armored cruiser USS San Diego hit a mine off Fire Island and sunk, it was the Navy’s only loss of a major warship for the war.
The cruisers were a major presence during World War II. In August 1941,the USS Augusta (CA 31) took President Roosevelt to a secret meeting with Winston Churchill at Placentia Bay, Argentina, Newfoundland, where the leaders reached an initial agreement on the principles of the Atlantic charter. Once the U.S. officially entered the war, the cruisers participated in many battles in the Pacific. The naval battles were fierce, and losses were heavy on both sides. Mines and torpedoes from Japanese ships and submarines, as well as the onslaught of Kamikaze cost the U.S. forces significant loss of life and the loss of a number of fighting ships.
The light cruiser USS Juneau (CL 119) provided the first naval support of the Korean War when it shelled enemy troops at Okkye in June 1950.
The USS Galveston (CL 93/CLG 3), commissioned on May 28, 1958, was the first cruiser to carry TALOS antiaircraft missiles.
The world’s first nuclear-powered task group, formed in May 1964, was comprised of guided missile cruiser USS Long Beach (CGN 9), along with attack carrier USS Enterprise (CVAN 65) and frigate USS Bainbridge (DLGN 256). Later that summer, the group circumnavigated the globe without stopping for replenishment—covering 30,565-nautical-mile between July 31 and October 1.
In April 1965, heavy cruiser USS Canberra (CAG 2) was the United States’ first navy vessel to use a communication satellite to relay an operational message. Using the Syncom III, the message was sent from the coast of Vietnam to the Naval Communications Station in Honolulu.
The first amphibious assault on Vietnam, called Operation Starlite, took place on Aug. 18, 1965 when marines supported by the USS Galveston (CLG 3) and two destroyers attacked the Van Tuong Peninsula 14 miles south of Chu Lai. In this first large-scale action between U.S. and Viet Cong forces, U.S. troops ravaged the Viet Cong 1st Regiment, leaving 964 dead and taking 125 Viet Cong prisoners. Among the marines, there were about 50 dead and 125 wounded.
The cruisers and other naval vessels continued to support U.S. troops in Vietnam. In March 1967, heavy cruiser USS Canberra (CAG 2) worked with destroyers USS Keppler (DD 765) and USS Ingersoll (DD 652) to take out shore batteries near Vinh, North Vietnam.
The following lists reflects the bulk of the cruisers that have been used by the U.S. Navy. The following list of cruisers does not include foreign-built ships captured and used by the U.S. Navy or civilian ships that were converted for military use as auxillary cruisers.
