History of the USS George H.W. Bush Aircraft Carrier
The USS George H.W. Bush was ordered for the U.S. Navy on January 26, 2001. Her keel was laid down by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Newport News in Virginia on September 6, 2003. The carrier was commissioned on January 10, 2009.
Former President George H.W. Bush, the ship’s namesake, attended the commissioning ceremony. The USS George H.W. Bush is one of very few carriers to be named for someone who is living at the time of her christening.
USS George H.W. Bush is the tenth and last of the Nimitz-class carriers. After commissioning, she moved back to Newport News, Virginia for shakedown. She is available for service.
