Two South Korean families sue Japanese firm for mesothelioma deaths
The families of two South Korean residents who lived near a Japanese asbestos manufacturing company have sued for damages arising out of the residents’ deaths from mesothelioma. Union leader James Middleton, who revealed mesothelioma risk at Johns-Manville plant, dead at 72
James Middleton has died at 72 after a long lung illness. The former union leader was instrumental in revealing the danger of asbestos and chemical exposures at the Waukegan, Illinois Johns-Manville plant. He was the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Waukegan Local 60’s business manager from 1968 to 1993.

Canadian Cancer Society launches online handbook outlining environmental cancer risks
The Canadian Cancer Society’s new online handbook called The Environment, Cancer and You that outlines environmental substances that are known to or suspected of causing cancer. The handbook also offers advice on how to limit these environmental exposures.

Feds will clean up asbestos contamination at San Antonio’s old Big Tex site
Asbestos-contaminated soil at the old Big Tex site south of downtown San Antonio will finally be cleaned up by the EPA. Between 1961 and 1989, the former grain company site was a vermiculite processing plant where more than 100,000 tons of W.R. Grace’s asbestos-contaminated vermiculite ore from the Libby, Montana mine was processed.

Georgia EPD official warns that many asbestos workers use fake credentials
Don McCarty, an official with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, told a Newnan group recently that many people working in asbestos removal use false documents.
