About the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center:
The cancer center is the only Comprehensive Cancer Center in Orange County – the highest honor bestowed by the National Cancer Institute. Affiliated with the UC-Irving School of Medicine, the hospital is one of only 40 designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States by the National Cancer Institute. The Center is internationally recognized for its work in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Staff includes researchers, surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, nurses, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, social workers and dietitians.
The cancer center hosts the yearly Allen and Lee-Hwa Chao Lectureship, which draws researchers from around the globe to discuss their work. Funding for research at the Center is provided by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Health and other public and private sources.
The Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is on the forefront of not only treating cancer, but also preventing it. Clinical research focuses on colon, liver, oral, pancreatic and prostate cancer prevention, in both Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials.
UC Irvine also is one of only eight institutions nationwide to be named part of the NCI’s Cancer Genetics Network to examine the complex interactions between genes and cancer. UC Irvine is responsible for handling information on cancer cases diagnosed or treated in Orange, San Diego and Imperial counties.
