Florida Mayor Orders Removal of Asbestos Pipe

Asbestos-laden pipes were recently discovered in an area set for redevelopment into a park in Davie, Florida. Opening the area up to the public, especially children, could cause a potential health hazards to residents and others who may come in contact with the asbestos.

Judy Paul, the mayor of Davie, has called for at least $30,000 to properly remove the potentially hazardous asbestos-laden pipes before the area is converted into a public park.

Though many people believe asbestos to be a thing of the past, the material is still present in many buildings that were built prior to the 1970s. Asbestos, when disturbed, can become airborne, and be ingested by humans and possibly lead to asbestos cancers later in life, such as mesothelioma.
