Glacier National Park in Montana Closed Due to Asbestos Scare
Glacier National Park in Whitefish, Montana temporarily closed Monday after potential asbestos materials were discovered during the installation of a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the Park’s Headquarters Building. The park claims there is no confirmation that the materials contain asbestos, but are acting on the possibility that some of the building materials may contain asbestos.
The park is working on asbestos testing and will remain closed until it is deemed safe to return and employees have been temporarily relocated to other offices in the area.
Asbestos can be potentially dangerous when disturbed, typically during renovations. Once airborne, fibers can be easily inhaled and once, if inhaled, can settle into the lung and possibly lead to the development of deadly asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma.
