Asbestos Removal from Indiana Building Will Cost Millions

The cost of renovating Fort Wayne, a building located in Indiana, could exceed estimates by more than $1 million due to the presence of asbestos. The toxic mineral was commonly used in building materials prior to the 1980s, but only becomes hazardous to people if the asbestos is disturbed, usually during renovations.

Currently, filtration, the isolation of certain work areas, and the use of negative air pressure if keeping employees and visitors safe from asbestos exposure. While this is a helpful temporary measure, the asbestos needs to be properly removed before any further work is done on the building.

Once airborne, asbestos fibers can be inhaled by anyone who comes in contact with it and can possibly cause deadly diseases such as mesothelioma and other asbestos cancers.

The County Commissioners are considering contracts with various asbestos abatement firms.
