Mesothelioma News Salutes Veterans
Today, we honor the brave men and women who have fought to protect our country and the freedoms American citizens enjoy.
Unfortunately, a growing number of Veterans are suffering from lung cancer and the deadly cancer mesothelioma.
According to retired Admiral T. Joseph Lopez, USN, a member of the Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) board and only the second admiral in the Navy to rise to a four star rank from direct commissioning from the enlisted ranks: “Lung cancer kills more Americans and Veterans than all other major cancers combined and it is attacking our Veterans with a higher frequency than our civilians…”
One of the first studies of the disparity in lung cancer incidence and mortality was conducted by the Veterans’ Administration (VA) in 1987 and showed that former Marine ground troops in Vietnam died of lung cancer at a 58 percent higher rate than marines who did not serve in the conflict.
