Former inspector sentenced to prison for taking asbestos bribes

Former city inspector Michael Cease of Chicago, Illinois pled guilty to accepting a bribe and was sentenced to a year and a day in prison plus two years of supervised probation. Following a tip, the Inspector General’s office and the FBI partnered an investigation into Cease’s activities and found that he had solicited a bribe for $600 bribe in exchange for providing false documentation indicating that an asbestos abatement firm had properly disposed of asbestos in a building. He later asked for more, claiming it was for his boss. When a cooperating witness, at the direction of the FBI, handed over the additional $550 bribe, Cease was arrested. The bribery exchange meeting was conducted under FBI audio and video surveillance.
