Asbestos-covered Electric Map donated to the Gettysburg Foundation

The Electric Map at Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania has been in storage for two years while its future was debated. Recently, it was donated to the Gettysburg Foundation, a decision that did not sit well with some of the family members of the map’s creator.

The 12-ton map, which features lighted displays highlighting the advancement of troops during the Battle of Gettysburg was a popular attraction at the park until 2008, but presents some challenges to its owners. The map is covered in friable asbestos and needs to be restored or recreated. The Gettysburg Foundation is deciding how to move forward.
