Beattie Tech building earns Silver LEED certification

The A.W. Beattie Career Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, originally built in 1965, has undergone a major renovation for the first time in its history. The building had to be completely gutted, and tons of asbestos was removed before the new work could take place. In addition to making the building safer for the students with the removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials, the school has installed upgrades that will make the building green, with a 21 percent reduction in energy use and a 33 percent reduction in water use.

Solar panels, energy efficient appliances, motion detectors for lighting controls, new heating and air conditioning units, and high-efficiency plumbing fixtures and water-efficient landscaping were installed, making the school a Certified Silver LEED building. The certification qualifies Beattie for state and local government incentives.
