Grand Forks Civic Auditorium undergoes asbestos abatement
New apartments will take the place of the old Civic Auditorium in Grand Forks, North Dakota. City council members recently settled on a plan with developer Kevin Ritterman. The new building will have some commercial space, parking stalls purchased or leased from the adjacent GuestHouse International Inn, and 53 residential apartments.
The developer has already secured funding for the asbestos abatement and demolition of the Civic Center. Asbestos must be handled with care and removed according to state and federal clean air regulations designed to protect the workers, the community and the environment. When disturbed, the particles can become airborne. People who breathe the dust are at risk for mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that can take decades to develop.
