Taconite miner mesothelioma study moves to Silver Bay

The University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health is conducting a study to try to define the relationship between taconite mining and diseases cased by exposure to asbestos, including asbestosis and mesothelioma. The study, which began in 2007, was prompted by a high incidence of mesothelioma among residents in northeastern Minnesota.

In September, the study will expand from the Iron Range area to Silver Bay, a region home to a taconite pellet processing and shipping facility in operation since the 1950s. The study examines the respiratory health data of current and former taconite industry workers and their spouses to determine the risk of mesothelioma and other respiratory ailments.
