Japanese researchers identify new malignant pleural mesothelioma indicator
A team of Japanese researchers recently published a report in Modern Pathology that identifies the protein CD146 as a reliable and sensitive indicator of malignant pleural mesothelioma. The researchers found that the protein was evident in the blood in higher levels in patients with malignant mesothelioma when compared to patients with benign lung conditions. CD146 has been tied to other forms of cancer, but this is the first evidentiary link to malignant mesothelioma. The research team proposes that CD146 may be used as a diagnostic indicator for earlier detection of mesothelioma.
