Warren County swallows cost of asbestos disposal

Warren County officials thought they were done with asbestos abatement at the site of the former county Department of Social Services in Queensbury, New York, but more asbestos was recently discovered on the bricks that form part of the building façade. Supervisors were hoping to keep the cost overruns down on the $350,000 demolition project, but decided against burying the bricks onsite, where they might become a problem in the future. Instead, they have elected to take the more expensive route and dispose of the debris at an approved asbestos disposal landfill. There was talk of suing the company that performed the initial asbestos testing and failed to find the asbestos on the bricks, resulting in extra time and an additional estimated $120,000 to the project for cleanup. City officials are hoping to negotiate that down.
