Engineer dies of mesothelioma after seven year battle
Hugh Gordon Goldsmith, founder of Hugh G. Goldsmith and Associates civil engineering and land surveying firm in Washington, died on August 21, 2010 following a prolonged battle with mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. He was 83 years old.
Goldsmith served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948. A significant percentage of mesothelioma victims are retired Navy personnel due to the amount of asbestos they were exposed to on the ships. After his discharge from the Navy, he earned a civil engineering degree from Seattle University. In 1958, he founded his own business, Hugh G. Goldsmith and Associates. One of his significant contributions to his field was helping get a law passed in the 1950s that only professional land surveyors can subdivide land. Prior to that law, there was little regulation about subdividing land.
A funeral mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Kirkland.
