Easthampton property contaminated with asbestos
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that the soil behind a facility in Easthampton, Massachusetts is contaminated with asbestos and is holding the two companies who own the property responsible for cleanup. They will also be fined more than $72,000. The cleanup is expected to cost $833,000.
Asbestos handling and cleanup is strictly regulated because of the dangers involved. Even low levels of asbestos exposure can lead to serious illnesses like lung cancer and mesothelioma, which is why the EPA levies fines against environmental offenders.
