After Failed Auction, School Buildings to be Razed

School officials decided to auction off Maple Street Elementary School and the former Orrville Junior High School in Wooster, Ohio, but there were no takers. Several people showed up to watch, but none came to bid even the minimum of $125,000 on either of the old buildings.

The Board of Education has no choice but to demolish the schools after extensive asbestos abatement. The work will begin in the fall and is likely to be completed in the spring, depending on the weather. The buildings will be razed, and the sites planted with grass and parceled out for sale or auction. Furnishings, fixtures and equipment will be auctioned off this month.

Parts of the buildings with historical significance will be saved, like stones engraved with dates and class gift designations, the flagpole, and a carved stone cartouche on the junior high school’s front pediment. Bricks will be available to anyone who wants them for nostalgic reasons.
