Demolition will cost almost twice as much as purchase price for YWCA building
The City of Des Moines, Iowa has offered to buy the old downtown YWCA building for just over $1 million, but the cost of demolishing the building with asbestos abatement could cost in excess of $1.85 million. Initial estimates were in the neighborhood of $700,000. City officials would like to own the centrally located property, but the additional demolition costs may have priced the building out of range. They will close on the building sometime this month if the cost issues can be resolved.
