Rhode Island beach bathhouse closed due to asbestos
The North Pavilion at Town Beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island was originally built in the 1950s for the convenience of beachgoers. Over the years, the rows of rental changing rooms lining a wooden boardwalk have become so damaged that the asbestos roofing is brittle and considered friable – easily crushed – which may expose the public to dangerous asbestos fibers unless something is done. At first, the town council considered replacing the old pavilion, but the $9.5 million price tag brought talks to a halt. The new plan, to renovate the existing structures using Vortex, a company experienced in asbestos abatement, will cost a comparatively inexpensive $49,850.
The changing rooms will be closed for the duration of the renovation project, but the first aid station, bathrooms and concession stands, which are outside the construction area, will remain open.
