129-year-old hotel comes down in Kansas City
The historic Cosby Hotel building might have been spared demolition if not for the severe 2009 winter weather. The 129-year-old building was originally slated for renovation, but the winter weather, followed by a wet spring, caused so much damage to the brick façade that city officials decided to order the building demolished.
The Cumberland Redevelopment Corp., the entity formed to handle redevelopment of the structure, will be footing the $115,000 bill. Crews are removing asbestos from the interior and readying to begin demolition work. Rick Powell, who owns the building, intends to put a similar building in the same spot.
