With a little work, old fire hall could revitalize Michigan town
The old fire hall on LeRoy St. in Fenton, Michigan is a brick building with a lot of character. City officials hope to sell the 6,000 square ft. building to a developer who will turn it into a commercial property either whole or divided for different uses, like restaurants, shops and even a bar. A liquor license is a possibility, and a place to gather would meet the goal of revitalizing the downtown area. The project would need city council approval prior to implementation. No appraisal has been performed, so the prospective sale price has not yet been determined.
A committee is currently reviewing proposed plans for the old building, including financial information and details of past projects from prospective buyers to determine whether the buyer will be capable of finishing the project once accepted. Up to four applicants will be accepted for final review, and those will be asked to provide a more detailed overview of the proposal.
The building will need some inside renovations before the project can begin. Asbestos contamination in the building materials requires abatement, and the electrical, plumbing, mechanical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems need to be updated.
