Mayor wants asbestos pipes replaced in Florida mobile home park

Mayor Judy Paul of Davie, Florida is adamant about replacing asbestos-cement pipes running under the closed Palma Nova mobile home community before it is redeveloped as a city park. The pipes once supplied water and sewer to a population of about 3,500 residents; some town officials argue that the pipes are safe and the $30,000 cost of replacing them is too much. Experts say that if the pipes are damaged, there is a danger of mesothelioma-causing asbestos fibers being released into the air. Council members were not aware of asbestos piping when they agreed to purchase the property. The measure will go to a vote before construction on the park begins.
