Human extracellular matrix effective against mesothelioma and other cancers in studies

Histogen, a regenerative medicine company launched in 2007, presented findings at June’s International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) Annual Meeting in a presentation called "Human embryonic-like ECM stimulates proliferation and differentiation in stem cells while killing cancer cells." The company’s purpose is to develop a series of high value products that do not contain embryonic stem cells or animal components. The presentation cited study data indicating that human extracellular matrix (hECM) produced significant reduction in tumor growths resulting from melanoma, breast cancer, colon cancer and glioma, both in vitro and in vivo. The inhibitory effect was also observed with malignant mesothelioma cells in vitro. Emmett Pinney, Histogen’s Director of Oncology, is optimistic about the prospects of this development.
