Arizona contractors fined $100k for asbestos violations at MCAS Yuma

Hunt Building Comp Ltd, Camp Pendleton and Quantico Housing LLC and Flores-Sierra contractors Inc. have agreed to pay hefty fines stemming from charges of asbestos air quality violations after they performed work in January and February 2006 on base housing units in the Capehart military family housing neighborhood. Marine Corps Air Station Yuma officials were concerned about inadequate asbestos abatement and asked the companies to change procedure. When no changes were made, charges were filed. The two construction companies have also agreed to reimburse any uninsured costs of medical screening for asbestos exposure for residents.

Asbestos abatement is strictly regulated because of the health risks involved. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can cause serious illnesses like lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
