Campus housing on former Air Force base gets serious renovations

The State of Texas acquired the James Connally Air Force Base some time ago, and plans were in place to turn it into a technical institute. Right now, the focus is on 500 houses that once were military housing and today serve as Brazos Community housing. Using a $7 million bond, the state is renovating 200 of the wood-frame duplexes and single-frame houses on the southeast side of campus, which were built in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The houses will require asbestos abatement before the remodeling work begins, and then crews will update the interiors, including taking down some walls for a more organic flow.

The construction is taking place one small area at a time, and tenants in the work zone are given 60 days advance notice to relocate to a different house within the community. Rent will increase by $90 a month on the renovated houses, but the project manager says that the improvements and new insulation will lower the electric bills by quite a lot to offset the additional rent.
