Asbestos, mold, electrical problems plague Georgia nursing home

The 50-year-old Crestview Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fulton County, Georgia needs more than $15 million in renovations. Crestview serves as the county nursing home for poor, elderly or chronically sick people who can’t afford private care, and it’s running at maximum capacity. Major repairs are needed to the aging building, but the complete overhaul necessary has met with political opposition.

In the past, renovations have been done piecemeal as necessary, but the chairman of the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority says it’s no longer enough. Unless the underlying problems are addressed, the problems will persist, costing more money each year. The options are a complete renovation with asbestos abatement or an entirely new building. Officials hope they can reach an agreement soon.
