ADAO supports removal of serpentine as California state rock
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) recently made a public announcement of gratitude and support for California Senator Gloria Romero for authoring a bill to remove asbestos-laden serpentine as California’s state rock and to the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources for passing the bill.
Senator Romero stated that California has the highest rate of mesothelioma deaths in the nation, and added that toxic materials have no place serving as state emblems. Serpentine was chosen as the California State rock in 1965 to support its thriving asbestos mining industry. Today, asbestos cancers and respiratory diseases including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer claim 10,000 lives every year in the United States and almost 100,000 worldwide. The mission of the ADAO is to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure. Their “Drop the Rock” campaign was dedicated to Army Archerd, a well-known Daily Variety journalist who succumbed to mesothelioma and died in September 2009.
