Historic Buena Vista mansion slated for serious renovations

The Buena Vista mansion, built about 1849, is one of Roanoke, Virginia’s oldest homes. Scott and Ascension Horchler would like to buy the mansion to renovate for use as a private home, but the community has expressed some concerns. The property, used for years as a community center, would be sold to a private individual, along with three acres of Jackson Park, for a paltry $75,000. Repair costs, which will include asbestos removal, are estimated at $500,000.

The Horchlers have a good track record of renovating historic properties and say they will preserve the historic landmark standards of the house and land. If the sale is approved, restrictions on its use and sale will be part of the deal, but the proposition allows part of the house, specifically the ground floor including the ballrooms to be rented out for public functions.
