$34 million already spent on asbestos removal in Midtown Plaza project

In October 2007, the State of New York committed to funding the tens of millions of dollars necessary to level retail and office buildings in Rochester. Just recently, a contractor was approved to begin the work. The $9.6 million project, which includes completely demolishing six buildings, three skyway bridges plus the partial demolition of Midtown Mall, Midtown Tower and the Seneca Building, will free up 8.6 acres in the heart of the city for new construction.

The city is confident that the state will make good on its commitment, but construction will not start until the budget is approved. To date, the state has handed out $39 million for the Midtown project, including $34 million for asbestos abatement. Before the project is over, costs may run as high as $90 million, including infrastructure improvements. The state has agreed to $55 million and the city hopes to rely on private funding and federal dollars, in addition to its own coffers, to make up the rest.
