Asbestos-laden Cinedome 70 faces an uncertain future

Locals in Salt Lake City, Utah are campaigning to save the old Riverdale Cinedome 70 from destruction. The distinctive domed construction was the cutting-edge technology when it opened in 1970, boasting two theaters, 70-foot curved screens, surround sound, stadium seating and 70-millimeter film projectors.

Locals consider the old building a landmark and are trying to find a way to save it, but realistically, the building is too damaged for salvage to be cost effective. In poor repair and riddled with asbestos building materials, it would cost more to renovate than to raze. The Larry H. Miller Group currently holds the lease on the property and is considering putting a car dealership there. Allen Glines, 23, who started the grassroots protest on Facebook, says he’s not ready to give up.
