Oregon floor restoration company fined for asbestos violations

CZ Becker, a wood floor restoration company, has been fined $3,600 by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for improper removal of 100 square feet of asbestos floor tiles last June. Workers used a mechanical sander on the asbestos flooring, which most likely released asbestos fibers into the air.

Asbestos fibers are toxic, as the material has been proven to cause serious illnesses like mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. There is no safe level of asbestos exposure.

CZ Becker did not have the license required to handle asbestos materials. The contractor has appealed the penalty.
