Mesothelioma patient participates in Florida Look Good, Feel Better program

The American Cancer Society sponsors a nationwide program called “Look Good … Feel Better” that helps cancer patients regain their self-image by giving them the tools and the skills to improve their appearance. Brenda Montoya has volunteered to teach the class two hours a month for the last 15 years in Port St. Lucie, Florida. She teaches recently diagnosed cancer patients how to create drawn eyebrows following hair loss due to chemotherapy, how to deal with skin changes and sensitivity to light, and how to choose a flattering wig. Nail care and polish is also included in the program agenda.

One of the program attendees, Betty Johnson, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in January. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Johnson said the program helped her come out from behind her mask.

Beyond the simple aesthetics of beauty tips, the program offers women hope, self-esteem and camaraderie while spending some time with others facing the same challenges. Women attending the program receive professional beauty advice and a free makeup bag with a value of $250.
