Former Tile City building in Pennsylvania to be razed
The city of New Kensington, Pennsylvania is debating the removal of a downtown landmark building that has been empty and deteriorating since the mid-1990s. The building was originally home to Montgomery Ward and then to Tile City, but is now owned by the Redevelopment Authority of New Kensington. It has been shown to many developers over the years, but the extensive renovations needed in the 50,000 square foot building are daunting to potential buyers.
Demolition alone will cost more than $200,000. Before demolition can begin, a thorough asbestos abatement must be performed, and the cost for that is unknown. Federal Community Development Block Grant funds will pay for the project. Once the building is razed, the lot will be sold with strict construction and maintenance requirements.
