Parent protest successfully delays asbestos work at Wisconsin high school
Parents took Nicolet High School to court over a proposed plan to remove asbestos from the school while school was in session—and won. Just a few hours before the judge was to rule on the matter, the school district agreed to delay the project until summer, when no students could be exposed to potentially harmful asbestos fibers from the renovation.
A former asbestos attorney and parent of a Nicolet student, Michael Watton led the effort to stop the school from endangering the students. The school superintendent argued that there was no risk to the students and that fears were unfounded. In a letter to the parents, he added that the three-week delay would cost the school money and delay the planned completion of the new academic support center and library.
