Libby asbestos victims get Medicare benefits

The new health care laws contain special consideration for people who live or have lived in Libby, Montana, the location of the old W.R. Grace vermiculite mine. For many decades, the company mined vermiculite, setting asbestos fibers loose into Libby air in the process. Hundreds of people have died from mesothelioma, and many more are sick. Since the disease can take 40 years to manifest, and everyone who ever lived in Lincoln County is potentially at risk, the death toll from exposure may take several decades to tally.

Montana Democratic Senator Max Baucus added the new and unusually specific health benefits to the national health care bill. He has been an ardent supporter of asbestos cleanup and health care.

A new Social Security office opened its doors in Libby in May and is already flooded with claimants. They are offering a streamlined process to get people the help they need as quickly as possible. The benefits are opened to all residents, so all that’s needed is a driver’s license and a Social Security number. Financial aid is available to help with premiums and deductibles, and even people who have never held a job are eligible. Qualified participants will receive full spectrum care and be treated for any and all health concerns.
