City considers soil capping for asbestos contamination to save on transportation costs

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is petitioning the court to bury asbestos-contaminated soil removed from yards in an old gravel pit outside of town, instead of transporting it to a former vermiculite mine in Libby. The alternative solution would net the city $1 million in savings from reduced transportation costs, and the old gravel pit is likely to be unsuitable for any other use.

Troy’s remedial project manager, Catherine LeCours, says that the materials will be wet down before dumping to minimize air contamination. Once the project is completed, a cap of clean soil will be added over the top to contain the contamination.
