California theater to close for asbestos, HVAC work

The Downey Theater in Downey, California was built in 1971 and still uses its original heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Before a new HVAC system can be installed, asbestos abatement must be performed in accordance with state and federal laws and the Clean Air Act.

Sprayed-on fireproofing and insulating material will be removed from the old building during a four-week period beginning in July. The cost of removing the hazardous asbestos materials is $28,730 and will be funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
