Improper asbestos removal at motel demolition site
Based on a complaint received on May 14, the New York State Department of Labor advises avoiding an area next to Potter’s Diner where a motel used to stand. The motel has been demolished, but asbestos debris was found in the wreckage. Richard Galusha, one of the owners of the land where the motel was located, was cited for non-compliance with asbestos laws.
Galusha claimed ignorance of asbestos laws, which specify that an asbestos survey must be completed before demolition can begin, trained asbestos workers must be employed to handle asbestos materials and special handling procedures must be followed. When questioned, both city and county officials that issued permits on the project said that it is not their responsibility to inform people of asbestos laws.
