Humboldt State University has asbestos scare in science building
The installation of a computer port in the chemistry department at Humboldt University in California caused a minor panic when HSU officials realized that the sanding might release asbestos fibers into the air. To stop the spread of any potential asbestos dust, the heating and cooling system was shut down, doors were locked and the building was quickly evacuated by people wearing protective breathing masks. Warning signs were posted outside the building.
Encapsulated asbestos may have been used in the table construction, and sanding could set the toxic material free. An industrial hygienist has been brought in by HSU officials to test the indoor air quality, take samples and determine whether any asbestos is present. School officials hope that the building is declared safe and summer school can begin as scheduled. As a precaution, the chemistry lab may be moved to another building.
