Asbestos removal begins at Delaware Hotel
Asbestos removal has begun at the decrepit Delaware Hotel in Delaware City, Ohio. Workers have had 40 hours of asbestos removal training and the asbestos removal phase of the project is expected to take a month or two. To contain the dangerous materials during asbestos abatement, a barrier will surround the building. The air will be constantly cycled through filters and the workers will wet the asbestos while working to keep airborne contamination at a minimum.
Demolition of the building will take about three weeks, using a universal processor to recycle the concrete in the structure. About 80-90% of the building material is recyclable. The entire project should be finished sometime in August.
Once the structure is gone, the city hopes to attract proposals from developers. The Neighborhood Stabilization Program requires that a residential development must be built on the site by 2013. The city planning commission and council will review all proposals before selecting a plan and making a formal agreement with a developer.
