Old Massachusetts high school coming down next spring
Newton North High School students will return to a brand new building in the fall, but the old school building won’t be completely torn down until next March. The old 445,000-square-foot building is loaded with asbestos materials and located in a densely populated area, so demolition will be tricky and expensive. The plan is to work from the inside out, during the fall and winter when workers can keep the doors and windows closed to minimize escaping dust as they tear out the walls, flooring, ceiling and insulation where asbestos materials are most likely to be found. Only after the building is gutted and the asbestos debris is removed will the walls come down.
The project is expected to cost $10 million and will begin in July. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Massachusetts State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will oversee the asbestos abatement and disposal to ensure that proper procedures are followed. The city will also hire an independent industrial hygienist to monitor the abatement. Bids are being accepted now.
