Shaker building to make way for new fitness and community center

For 166 years, Bethany Hall has been a testament to Shaker building skill. Built by the community from hand-cut timbers and handmade bricks fired onsite, the building was erected in 1844. Soon, the historic building will come down to make room for a new fitness and community center to benefit the residents of Otterbein Retirement Living Communities.

Asbestos remediation has already begun and is expected to take several months before bids are opened for demolition. By the end of the year, the old building will be a memory. Every effort will be made to rescue historically significant pieces of the building, including cornerstones and bricks, which will be showcased in the new building.
