Mesothelioma gambler dies at age 60 before collecting more winnings
Jon Matthews refused to believe that he was going to die. The doctor who diagnosed his mesothelioma in 2006 gave him less than a year to live, so he decided to bet on himself, literally. He went to a bookmaker and placed a £100 stake at 50 to 1 odds that he would live to see 2007. He collected £5,000, placed the same bet for the following year, and collected another £5,000.
Unfortunately that was the end of his winning streak. He did not survive to collect on his third bet. Had he lived until June 1, 2010, he would have collected 100 to 1 odds and walked away with £10,000, but he missed winning by just a couple of weeks. Jon Matthews, from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire in the U.K., died of mesothelioma on Monday, May 3, 2010 after beating the odds for nearly three years.
