Iron Range mesothelioma study needs more active taconite workers, not just retirees

The University of Minnesota School of Public Health is conducting a $4.9 million research study to determine why Iron Range residents experience a higher that normal death rate due to mesothelioma, but they are having trouble finding participants among current taconite mine workers. The response has been high from retirees, but current mine workers and their spouses have received invitations for over a year, and so far only about 1,000 have answered, about half the number needed for the study. The focus of the study is to determine to what extent exposure to mine dust affects the health of taconite workers.
