Fire ravages Jordan’s Meats plant during demolition process
A massive fire destroyed the old Jordan’s Meats plant in Portland, Oregon in early May, sending a thick cloud of smoke over the area. The city was forced to cut electricity to much of the surrounding area for most of the day as a hundred firefighters fought to put out the blaze. Since the building had been abandoned for five years and was closed for demolition, firefighters focused on containing the blaze so it wouldn’t spread.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It started about 1:00 pm, while seven workers performing asbestos removal and demolition were outside having lunch. The workers tried to put out the fire with hoses, but the heat was too intense and they were forced out of the building. The building was not insured and has no real value.
