Pennsylvania historical society building to be demolished

The former Donora Historical Society building in Pennsylvania is coming down. The demolition project is expected to cost between $200,000 and $250,000 due to asbestos in the structure. The cost will be split between the Washington County Redevelopment Authority and the borough’s Community Development Block Grant fund.

The roof of the building collapsed after a heavy snowfall in February, and there were fears that the building might fall onto the nearby railroad tracks. A collapsed wall fell on and destroyed a neighbor’s home.

The historical society was fined $300 in April due to the poor condition of the building. During the demolition process, an engineer will need to be on site for the asbestos removal, and a railroad inspector will also need to be on site to make sure that none of the debris falls onto the tracks.
