Texas town removes asbestos from bridge

Work crews in Austin, Texas began removing asbestos in mid-April from a pedestrian bridge over Waller Creek. The asbestos was contained in a coating that covered the underside of the bridge. It was discovered during testing as the city prepared for the Waller Creek Tunnel Project.

Asbestos removal was completed by April 29. The toxic substance asbestos must be removed by trained professionals in order to prevent its fibers from becoming airborne. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can cause serious illnesses like asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
