National Abatement fined $14k for asbestos violations
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) fined National Abatement Inc. $14,310 for asbestos violations related to an April 2009 project at Rollstone Bank & Trust. DEP investigators discovered workers were improperly removing asbestos-containing panels from the exterior of the building. Regulations require contractors to wet and remove asbestos-containing panels intact, lowering them carefully to the ground to prevent breakage that could release asbestos fibers into the air. Asbestos-containing materials must then be sealed into leak-tight containers with asbestos warning labels on them.
National Abatement must pay $3,000 of the penalty, while the remainder will be suspended if the company has no further asbestos violations in the next year.
