Work crews sealing windows at Richwoods High School

During spring break, Richwoods High School in Peoria, Illinois underwent asbestos remediation after trace amounts of asbestos were found in classroom dust. The dust began accumulating following a major $4 million renovation last year that included new windows. Asbestos testing was done, and the results were either negative or negligible, but one teacher simply wasn’t satisfied. Dan Kerns paid for an independent test on his own, which found asbestos.

The construction company that did the renovation has agreed to perform the asbestos cleanup free of charge to the school, but only had time to do a partial cleanup during spring break. School officials say that full abatement will have to wait until the school is closed for summer. For now, the crew will caulk any cracks where dust might be seeping in and thoroughly vacuum the existing dust.
